The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has significantly expanded its worker housing initiative by approving and distributing thousands of free residential apartments to industrial laborers across the province. In December 2025, a balloting ceremony allotted 720 newly built apartments at the Sundar Industrial Estate to homeless workers. Subsequently, in February 2026, the cabinet approved a plan for 1,224 free flats for workers in Taxila and Sundar labor colonies. Earlier, in August 2025, the cabinet had already approved 1,220 flats to be allotted via balloting in complexes at Sundar, Kasur, and Taxila, with special quotas for widows and disabled workers. The initiative is part of a broader effort to provide dignity and financial relief to the workforce.
On International Labour Day 2025, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced a series of major initiatives for workers. Key announcements included the construction of a new labor colony at Warburton in Nankana Sahib district and the second phase of an existing colony in Multan. She also unveiled a comprehensive Rs 84 billion welfare package aimed at improving the lives of workers and miners across Punjab. The package includes a monthly subsidy of Rs 3,000 for 40,000 registered workers under the CM Ration Card programme, the construction of 300 daycare centers in factories, and new healthcare facilities.
